Individual And Group Behavior In Organization
We are aware with the fact that human behavior is complex. Every individual differs from each other. Thus, organizations face many difficulties. But the challenge of an effective organizational system lies in successfully managing and matching the task accordingly. There are many forces in and around organizations which can shape the behavioral pattern of the organization. A manager first would analyze the task. Then he would determine the skills required. Next he would assemble a team which is competent to each other skills. Thus this type of behavioral analysis can improve the consistencies in the team and creates a conflict free team.
It is important for the mangers to understand the individuals in the originations. With help of psychological contact, mangers can facilitate this understanding in a better way. This process is complicated due to individual differences. On individual basis, personality is the relatively stable set which includes psychological and behavior attributes. These aspects distinguish and set differences between person to person, one from another. The big five personality traits included in individual personality which affects the organizational behavior are:
- Agreeableness
- Conscientiousness
- Negative emotionality
- Extraversion
- Openness
There are various other types of individual personality traits which includes self – efficacy, authoritarianism, locus of control, risk propensity, self – esteem, Machiavellianism. Personality is relatively stable trait. An individual’s attitudes are based on his experience, emotions, intended behavior and knowledge. Some emotions are easily altered or changes. At individual level, work related attitudes can include job satisfaction or dissatisfaction and organizational commitment. Perception is the trait of personality through which an individual gets awareness. He interprets the environment information. Working in organization, stress at individual basis is natural. It is individual’s response towards any strong stimulus. Every individual is creative in himself. So, creativity is the capacity of new ideas and innovative thoughts.
Group behavior is an important concept. It determines the cohesiveness and coherence of the organization. It influences the organizational culture and organizational communication. It is required to inculcate group behavior in organizations for simple reason that employees must conform to the rules and regulations that rule, control and monitor the organizations. So, in order to mold the group behavior in the organizations, one need uniformity and consistency. Group behavior may be detrimental to the health of the organization. Group dynamics is a behavioral system in the organizations. Study of group dynamics can be useful to for understanding decision making behavior in the organization, creating effective therapy techniques etc. There is no fixed reason for the people to join groups in organizations. Some of the reason many include identity, power, security, influence, esteem, affiliation etc. Determinants of group behavior include group task, group processes, performance and satisfaction, group member resources, group structure, external conditions imposed on the groups etc.
