I have a problem. I still can't find what exactly to model. I need a clear scheme that I can implement in MATLAB, and I can't find one
  • A spreadsheet of lab results have been provided, the data obtained from the lab is be used to model a membrane bioreactor system in Matlab. Also estimated parameters are provided in a separate word document.
  • Use an activated sludge model 3 (ASM3) for Matlab to model the membrane bioreactor for parameters mentioned (estimates of required parameters) are provided)
  • Activated sludge model 3 code link:
  • Incorporating or using existing models (Activated sludge model 3) available to model and interpret lab results. (equations and symbols to be used in the code are explained in many papers sent)
  • Existing activated sludge models can be used however a model should be developed (in Matlab or aquarium or even in Simulink) the basis of this model could be based on other models THIS MUST BE STRONGLY REFENCED.
  • The model must be proved by calibration and validation. All the coding must be explained and included in the appendix with an explanation for what it means and stands for.

Parameter estimations should be included. (found in papers send for ASM 3) ( I have attached screen shots of those parameter estimates in another word file)
  • A dynamic model should be made.

Conclusions should be based on the results of modelling. Conclusions/modelling should touch on bio-kinetics of the system. The results and models need to be calibrated and validated.
  • The parameters to base conclusions and recommendations on are
  • COD (Chemical oxygen demand)
  • Decolourisation
  • MLSS (mixed liquid suspended solids)
  • Optical density
  • Some mention of backwashing impact should be included
  • Hence, conclude on biokinetics or mention something about biokinetics due to the usage of equations in Matlab.

    • A dynamic model: go through appendix c for code (pages 54 to 63 might be of use)
    • A modified Activated Sludge Model No. 3 (ASM3): this paper tells what needs to be downloaded and how to work with an arm model. Also lists parameters and some parameter ranges.
    • Activated sludge wastewater treatment plant modelling (explains ASM models)
    • Determination of bio-kinetic coefficients of an immersed membrane bioreactor (useful for equations)
    • Equations for ASM 3 (just list of useful equations)
    • Hoque 2010: a dissertation explaining how modelling is done, parameters and code. (the important information system has been highlighted in the pdf thesis) pages to refer to are : 17, 30-35, 61, 227-231
